Steven D. Goodman (1945–2020)

Steven D. Goodman obtained his BA at the University of California, Berkeley. He then studied at the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained his MA degree, followed by his PhD completed in 1984 under the guidance of Prof. Herbert v. Guenther (1917–2006). He was Associate Professor of Asian Philosophies and Cultures at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) where he worked as a research and program director for Asian and Comparative studies. He has also served as a Board Advisor to the Khyentse Foundation since its inception, working for the editorial committee for the Buddhist Literary Heritage Project (now 84000).
His fields of expertise in Tibetan studies were quite large covering classical Tibetan language and Buddhist studies, including rDzogs chen philosophy and practice, but also and foremost Abhidharma. See a video of him introducing the topic of his latest work on this subject here:
https://player.vimeo.com/video/225935279?dnt=1&app_id=122963

His work has inspired numerous students as well as translators, notably with his amazing pioneer research on the Klong chen snying thig, and his later research on the “Trickster in Buddhist Practice”. See for instance, Z.G. Ma’s :

On a related topic, see a 2005 interview of Steven D. Goodman in which he discusses the topic of “Crazy Wisdom” (ye shes ‘chol ba), conducted by the Editors of Inquiring Mind:

His latest book, The Buddhist Psychology of Awakening: An In-Depth Guide to Abhidharma, was just published on July 21, 2020, from Shambhala Publications:

Sadly, Steven passed away on August, 3rd 2020.
